CHARACTERS
Evelyn: English middle class woman. 40s-50s. Eva’s later self post fully assimilated to Britain. Keeps her past and Jewish roots a secret from her daughter, Faith. Anxious and distrusting. Compulsively cleans. Stifles a flurry of complicated emotions inside from unresolved trauma.
Eva: Evelyn's younger self. Jewish German becoming increasingly English. She starts the play at nine years old and finishes it at seventeen. Juggles conflicting desires to reunite with her birth family and to learn to move on with her new life. (Open to casting teens or adults with youthful essence)
Faith: Evelyn's only child. 20s college student. A little immature and still in the process of growing up. Has attempted to move out multiple times but can’t bring herself to separate from her mother yet. Desires to be closer to Evelyn, but struggles to understand her.
Helga: German Jewish woman of the late 1930s. Eva/Evelyn's mother. 30s. Well put together and polished. Makes the impossible choice to separate from her daughter and send her to Britain for the sake of her survival. Puts on a hard face to avoid scaring Eva further.
Lil: Eva/Evelyn's English foster mother. We see her from her 40s to her 80s. Good hearted and kind, but can be blunt and at times insensitive. Fiercely loyal and protective of Evelyn/Eva. Caught in the middle between Evelyn and Faith‘s discourse.
The Ratcatcher: A mythical character from a German children’s storybook called Der Rattenfanger. He looms a shadow over Eva/Evelyn's life; a manifestation of her trauma, fear, and grief. Also plays The Nazi Border Official, The English Organiser, The Postman, and The Station Guard.
REHEARSALS: Prospective start date of Monday, April 21st; Sundays through Thursdays from 7 - 10PM
