Character Descriptions BROKEN GLASS
Sylvia Gellburg: A Jewish American woman living in Brooklyn, NY. Deeply empathic and sensitive she is tormented by the world around her and the emotional suffocation of her decades of marriage. She suddenly loses the use of her legs when she reads newspaper accounts detailing the Nazi atrocities during Kristallnacht.
Phillip Gellburg: A rigid Wall Street Banker specializing in foreclosures. He is conflicted by his Jewish identity and his obsession with status, assimilation and emotional repression.
Dr. Harry Hyman: A neighborhood Jewish American doctor who treats Sylvia at Phillip’s insistence despite his lack of psychiatric experience or training.
Margaret Hyman: Harry’s non-Jewish wife. A grounded, good-humored nurse who works alongside her husband.
Harriet: Sylvia’s devoted younger sister who cares for her diet, health and medical needs. She is deeply rooted in her local Brooklyn Community.
Stanton Case: The Upper Class WASP President of Phillip’s bank. He represents the community and culture Phillip longs to emulate and join.
